A power anthem is a song that lifts your spirits, calms your stress, or otherwise makes you feel like you’re ready to take on the world.
There are anthems for different moments: the I’m-over-you breakup song, the fight song, the don’t-mess-with-me-world ballad. (Think: The Rocky theme. Pharrell’s “Happy.” Alanis Morissette circa 1995.)
In college, my roommate and I shared something called “secret song,” which may or may not have been our code name for Come Clean by Hilary Duff. We felt like we were supposed to be too sophisticated to like it but… we did. A lot. So when no one else was around, we would close the door and secretly rock out. Even now, hearing that song never fails to make me smile.
The effects of music on mood are well-documented, but living in a city where I don’t have a car, and thus built-in time with a radio, I sometimes forget the boost you can get from just a few minutes with a frothy, bubble-gum hit.
Even so, power anthems have gotten me through job interviews, life changes and many a stressful morning commute. Some are upbeat and dance-y. Others are classic and tied to good memories. And then there’s Elton John. (What can I say? “Your Song” has this magical power to make me feel better.)
Do you have a power anthem? Or even better, a power playlist? Please share!
